Education In Crisis - SUDAN

Children deserve to feel safe enough to learn.

A trauma-informed Social Emotional Learning programme for conflict-affected children aged 7–14, designed and deployed across Sudan’s Accelerated Learning Programme
centres.

The Context

Sudan’s ongoing civil war has fractured communities, displaced families, and shut down schools across the country. Children gathered in Accelerated Learning Programme centers, and makeshift classrooms, sometimes in rooms with no walls, to continue their education.

A child whose nervous system has been shaped by instability cannot simply be asked to sit and learn. Felt safety must come first.

SEL is not an accessory to learning. In Sudan’s context, emotional safety is not only a precondition for learning, it is often the main learning.

Regions

Port Sudan, Kassala & River Nile (Phase 1). Expansion to Khartoum & national scale (Phase 2).

Setting

Accelerated Learning Programme (ALP) centres — delivered while national schools remained closed.

Who We Serve

Conflict-affected children aged 7–14 experiencing displacement and interrupted education.

In Their Own Words

What happens when a child feels safe enough to speak

Child, Port Sudan

When I breathed slowly, I felt the world slow down and I felt safe inside.

Child, Kassala

I was afraid to close my eyes, now in these meditations I can close my eyes and enjoy the peace in my mind.

Child, Kassala

I kept having nightmares. Now I do box breathing until I fall asleep and I don't get scared.

Teacher, Port Sudan

SEL made me calmer, not only as a teacher, but as a mother. I react less and understand more.

Head of School , Kassala

Before, my children only asked me for money. Now they make a heart shape and ask for a hug.

Parent, Programme Community

We have never been taught emotional tools. We want to learn what our children are learning.

Daniel Baheta, Head of Education, UNICEF Sudan

"A new Sudan will be built by its children, by the quality of their relationships and their capacity to repair them."
