The Nairobi Children's Rescue Centre

About the Nairobi Children's Rescue Centre

This centre was formerly known as the Nairobi Children’s Home and is the only government operated home for orphaned and abandoned children from birth to seven years of age in Nairobi.

Background:

  • Nairobi Children’s Rescue Center is a Government Institution under the Ministry of Labour and Child Social Protection.
  • The Home was established in 1989 as a rescue centre and place of safety for children.
  • The Home has a capacity of 60 children but the population fluctuates from time to time; influx is largely attributed to the breakdown of social norms, high poverty rates, and HIV/AIDS.
  • It is the only Institution supporting children in need of care and protection in their formative years that is ages 0-7.

Location:

The Home is located along Lower Kabete-Kapenguria road junction after Lower Kabete Campus, in Kitusuru.

Category of Children:

The Home was designed to offer a place of safety for children in need of care and protection. This includes:

  • Abandoned children
  • Neglected children
  • Lost children
  • Orphaned children
  • Battered children
  • Abused children
  • Children of imprisoned parents
  • Children of terminally ill parents
  • Children with disputed parenthood
  • Children of destitute families
  • Other categories of children in need of special care and protection

Programmes Provided:

  • Food, shelter and clothing
  • Suitable healthcare
  • Home tracing & family re-integration
  • Education for the younger children through a basic nursery school.
  • Networking with Homes run by NGOs, Faith Based Homes, Community Based Homes, Foster Care centres, to secure vacancies for placements.

Reintegration Strategy:

The institution has adopted the below methods of re-integrating the children:

  • Reintegration: This is the process of reuniting the child with his/her family. “After successful conversations and educational sessions, the child is ready to show us the way to their home or school through ‘Home Tracing’, the child is then re-united with the family through specific re-integration methods”.
  • Family Group Discussion Meeting (FGDM): It takes place when a child has shown us his/her home and certain issues arise. Issues that need our office, church leaders, school management and other Administrative offices to address. During this meeting all stakeholders are given a chance to have an input for the way forward in the best interest of the said child or children.

The Center has empowered families, traced abandoned children back to their families, and is seeking solutions for children to enter into foster care where they can be raised in family settings.
